ITINERARY
Day 1 Rome - Greccio - Piediluco Lake - Abbazia San Pietro in Valle Morning transfers from Rome train station, where you will be met by your tour manager. Our first stop is Greccio, a spectacular place located at 2000 ft on a steep rock overlooking the "Holy Valley", where St.Francis used to wander. Welcome lunch in a typical Umbrian restaurant. Continue along the shore of Piediluco Lake and off the beaten path villages, before arriving at your resort San Pietro in Valle, which is a Historical Country Residence, surrounded by a thick vegetation, within the natural park of the Nera river. The retreat is a part of a XII th century benedictine Abbey and it is a national monument. Evening at leisure Day 2 Visso - Castelluccio - Norcia Departure through a spectacular road to Visso, the gate of the Monti Sibillini National Park. Stop at the village of Castelluccio, known as the source of some of the world’s finest lentils, which you can buy from local farmers. Nature lovers come to Castelluccio to see some of Italy’s most dramatic, undiscovered natural beauty, the "Wildflowers bloom", which happens every year between the end of May and the beginning of July, when Europe’s single best wild flower display, carpets the six square miles of Castelluccio plain. Continue to Norcia, the birthplace of St Benedict and the realm of the spicy sausage, truffles, and spelt (ancient species of wheat from the fifth millennium BC). Have lunch in one of the many local restaurants. Return to your hotel in the late afternoon Day 3 Marmore Waterfall - Medieval villages in River Nera Valley Full day dedicated to explore the marvelous river Nera valley, dotted with charming villages like Montefranco, Castel di Lago and Ferentillo, where some of the best preserved mummies are on display in the mummy museum, in the church of Santo Stefano. See "Marmore's Falls", created by the ancient Romans. Its total height is 541 feet, making it the tallest man-made waterfall in the world. Return to your retreat in the late afternoon and dinner at the hotel Day 4 Spoleto - Montefalco - Bevagna - Bettona Departure for Spoleto, famous for its summer music festival and have a guided tour of the town. Visit the Cathedral and walk on the "Bridge of Towers" for breath-taking views of the valley and gorge below. Continue to Montefalco, a beautiful hill town renowned for its Sagrantino wine and its gorgeous hand-woven linens. Have lunch in a local country farm overlooking the valley below. Visit Bevagna and Bettona, two of the most charming villages in Umbria. Arrival at your hotel "Alla Posta dei Donini" , near Perugia, an historical residence dating back to the nineteen century, where you will spend the next four nights. Dinner at the hotel restaurant Day 5 Assisi - Spello Guided tour of Assisi. See St Francis Basilica, St Clare Church, the "Porziuncola" with the Rose Garden and other monuments in town. Afternoon in Spello, a town built entirely of pink stone and well known for its flower festival. Return to your hotel in the evening Day 6 Orvieto - Civita di Bagnoregio - Bolsena Lake Departure for Orvieto, an Etruscan town built on a steep rock and stroll on its cobbled streets. Have lunch in one of the most amazing places in Italy, a wine cellar dating back to more than 2500 years ago. Continue to Civita di Bagnoregio, one of the world’s most unique and enchanting towns, where only twelve people live during the winter time. Stop along the shores of Bolsena Lake for a picture before going back to your hotel Day 7 Perugia - Trasimeno Lake - Cortona Visit Perugia, the Umbria's capital town, rich in art and history. Continue along the shore of the Trasimeno lake and arrive at Passignano, a tiny medieval village. Head north towards Tuscany and stop in Cortona, where the movie "Under the Tuscan sun" was filmed. Visit the village of Castiglion del Lago, along the shore of the Trasimeno Lake, and have a farewell dinner at a local restaurant, before returning to your hotel Day 8 Transfer to Rome Morning transfers to Rome train station |
